Daniel joined the Novalex law firm after practising business law as a partner within a national law firm for over thirty years.
Daniel Bénay is a counsel in our Business Law Group at Novalex. His practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, financing, corporate law, energy (power), mining and infrastructure (including public-private partnerships), as well as international legal consulting. His practice also focuses on international legal consulting.
In his international consulting practice, Mr. Bénay has advised on development and implementation of hydroelectric power generation facilities and related infrastructures in Madagascar, bank restructurings and securities legislation in Cameroon, secured transactions laws in Vietnam, Cambodia, El Salvador and Morocco, and implementation of privatization initiatives in Haiti.
Daniel Bénay is profiled in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, as a leader in the area of Energy (Electricity) and he is also rated by the Martindale-Hubbell Directory for the same area of expertise. He also appears as leading lawyer in natural resources law in the last edition of Best Lawyers in Canada, and he is also recognized as a leading lawyer in energy in Lexpert’s special edition Canada’s Leading Energy Lawyers (November 2014). Daniel Bénay lectured on Québec Mining Law in Osgoode Certificate in Mining Law (2013 and 2014).

ADVISED an insurance company in its acquisition of an insurance portfolio;
ADVISED national financial institutions in connection with their external financing requirements by increasing their capital;
ADVISED national financial institutions in connection with their regulatory regime;
ADVISED the Government of Madagascar on the development and implementation of hydroelectric power generation facilities and related infrastructures;
ADVISED a consortium initially consisting of a public entity and mining companies in their joint-venture to conduct a feasibility study for the development of multi-user rail network between port facilities to their respective mining sites in Québec;
ADVISED a national passenger transporter in connection with the procurement of a new rolling stock fleet and other related equipment.
